Chapman is a European cigarette brand known primarily for its flavored lines and aristocratic positioning. The brand was created in Germany in the second half of the 20th century (approximately in the 1970s–1980s) and initially targeted consumers seeking a more sophisticated alternative to mass-produced cigarettes. The brand’s production is historically linked to the German tobacco company Von Eicken, founded in the 19th century and specializing in cigarettes, cigarillos, and other tobacco products. It was Von Eicken’s experience and technological expertise that allowed Chapman to carve out a niche for flavored cigarettes with a relatively mild and balanced profile. The company has traditionally paid close attention to the selection of tobacco raw materials (including Virginia and Burley varieties) and the quality of its flavorings.
History of the Chapman brand
1980s–1990s: Image Development
During this period, Chapman became associated with:
- flavored cigarettes (vanilla, cherry, chocolate, etc.),
- elegant pack designs,
- a “milder” taste compared to traditional strong cigarettes. The brand was actively sold in Germany and gradually began to export to other European countries.
2000s: Product Line Expansion
In the 2000s, the product line expanded significantly. The following were introduced:
- Chapman Classic – a classic tobacco flavor without a pronounced flavoring;
- Chapman Gold – a flavored version with a milder profile;
- Chapman Super Slim – a superslim format with flavors;
- Limited edition and seasonal flavors.
Chapman solidified its reputation as an “aromatic” brand, targeting consumers who value smoke aroma and aftertaste.
2010s: Adapting to New Regulations
With the tightening of European legislation (including restrictions on flavored cigarettes and packaging requirements):
- the brand adapted its formulas to new EU regulations,
- changed the packaging design to comply with health warnings,
- focused on Eastern European markets and countries outside the EU. Despite bans on some flavors (especially menthol), Chapman continued to produce versions with a distinctive soft and sweet profile, complying with current regulations.
Main types of Chapman cigarettes
- Chapman Classic and Classic Super Slim are cigarettes made from two varieties of tobacco (Burley and Virginia). The tobacco blend is multicolored, with tobaccos ranging from yellowish to dark brown. The pack, like the cigarettes, exudes a soft tobacco aroma. The nicotine content is below average, so the quality of the pure tobacco is clearly noticeable.
- Chapman Gold and Super Slim Gold are flavored cigarettes. They have a rich, original aroma of aromatic vanilla and cinnamon. The same taste is noticeable when smoking these products. There is no chemical aftertaste, the process is very pleasant, and the aroma is moderate. In fact, Chapman Gold, like Classic, is very high quality, but differs in aroma. They are the same price.
- Chapman Red and Super Slim Red – Like the rest of their tobacco products, this type is made from high-quality Virginia tobaccos. The filter is slightly sweet, with a distinct cherry flavor. The aroma is lingering, but not chemically strong. These cigarettes are very pleasant to smoke, as they use natural tobacco with a below-average strength. The smoky aroma is soft and not cigarette-like.
- Chapman Brown and Super Slim Brown – unlike Gold and Classic, this variety has a rich coffee bean aroma, completely free of chemical aftertaste. The tobacco blend is slightly yellowish, white, and brownish, but sometimes there are almost black fractions. When smoking, there is a noticeable aftertaste of a sweet drink, but not cloying. The flavoring is not in the filter, but in the tobacco blend itself. The cigarettes are below-average strength, making them very pleasant to smoke, and in the mouth, instead of tobacco, the taste of aromatic coffee lingers.
