Chesterfield is one of the oldest and most recognizable tobacco brands in the world, with a history spanning over 120 years. For many decades, it has held a prominent place in the tobacco industry and continues to be sold in dozens of countries. The brand’s history dates back to the late 19th century. The first version of Chesterfield cigarettes appeared around 1896 in the United States, marketed by the Drummond Tobacco Company; the name derives from Chesterfield County, Virginia. In 1898, the brand was acquired by American Tobacco, and then in 1912, it was transferred to another major American tobacco company, Liggett & Myers Tobacco Company. Under Liggett & Myers’ management, cigarettes reached a new level of quality: the formula began to include a blend of Turkish and American tobaccos (Turkish-Virginia blend), and technical innovations also took place—Chesterfields were the first cigarettes in the United States with moisture-resistant packaging. Over the years, the brand was known for its quality and innovation, and its rights were later transferred to major international companies. Since 1999, Philip Morris International (part of Altria) has owned the rights to the brand, and today Chesterfield is produced and sold under their management in various regions of the world.
